Sadly the SR by Drive chart tells the tale of the game. We didn't get a drive with a SR of over 0.5 until the 7th drive (which was Simpson's 2nd drive of the game). Without doing an official analysis I use 0.5 as the minimum SR for a drive to be considered "acceptable". The 7th drive was also the last drive before the half. I' not sure when it started raining, but on the TV you could tell that it was pouring at the start of the 2nd quarter and looks like play stopped at around 12:24 of the 2nd.

We had three drives with a SR of more than 0.5, drives 7, 9, 12. Drives 7 and 9 both were run "dominant", 6 runs vs 5 passes. But we were successful on all the runs and only successful on 2 of the passes. The one highlight of the passing game did come in drive 9 with the very explosive Simpson to Dippre 45 yard pass.

Our mean drive SR only climbed back up to 0.336 from the low vs Texas (0.286) and the week one high of 0.545. I'll have to reprocess all my data to see if I can figure out what a good mean drive SR value should be.

Another table that I'll need to get some historic perspective on is the Distance/Gained by down statistics.

Recalling that for SRs the nominal distances to be successful on a 1st down is 5 yards and on 2nd down is 3.5 yards. Given this our median distances aren't looking good. The median distances were 8.5 yards for 2nd down and 5.0 yards for 3rd down versus the median gained of 4.5 yards on 2nd and 1.0 yards on 3rd. The one good bit of data from the Yards to Success vs Yards Gained by Down is that on 3rd and short we were successful on 5 out of 6 tries.

I did make some box and whisker plots for the Distance to 1st/TD and Yards Gained both by down. For the Distance to 1st/TD graph first down is going to be very unbox like and centered on 10 yards unless the game is just some kind of wild wrt penalties on 1st down. On 2nd down 50% of our plays were from 5.5 to 10 yards from a 1st/TD. On 3rd down 50% of our plays were from 1.5 to 9.5 yards from a 1st/TD.

Looking at the Yards Gained box-and-whisker plot, 1st down has 50% of our yards gained from 0 to just under 6 yards. On 2nd down 50% of the yards gained is from 0 to just over 12 yards with a median of 4.5, but with 50% of the distance being from 5.5 to 10 yards, median of 8.5 yards that just doesn't feel good.

The TL;DR of this is that I have no historic perspective, but it looks not good.

For the defense, the USF SR by drive chart looks great including the turnover that in fact was a TD for the good guys! Their mean drive SR was 0.183 and their longest drive of 15 plays had a 0.267 SR.

Finally penalties. I need to fix the dataset to include the offsetting penalties.

Within the SEC we are in the middle of the pack. And as compared to all FBS teams we have a z-score of -0.18 (see table at the bottom of this post). So just under the FBS mean though it feels much worse.
